Disculpa la falta de nueva entradas. Voy a estar en Inglaterra esta temporada estudiando una maestría en Conservación y Biodiversidad en el Universidad de Exeter.

Vicente Peña Aldrete, vocero de Los Grupos Ecologistas de Nayarit A.C. va a estar encargado a subir información sobre los actividades de protección de la tortuga marina "temporada 2008".

El total de nidos recolectadas en la playa El Naranjo ha aumentado a 10.

Estoy segura que están esperando noticias del comienzo de la nueva temporada de tortugas marinas aquí en la Bahía de Jaltemba, Nayarit.

Pues como pueden leer del titulo HAN LLEGADO LAS TORTUGAS!!!

I am sure you are all waiting for news of the start of the new marine turtle season here in the Jaltemba Bay, Nayarit.

Well as you can tell from the title THE TURTLES HAVE ARRIVED!!

Hasta hoy tenemos 3 nidos de tortuga golfina de la playa El Naranjo y la playa Punta Raza reportan 4 nidos recogidos durante esta primera semana. Comparadas con las temporadas anteriores vamos bien, y esperamos una buena temporada (hay mucha lluvia).

Como en la temporada anterior tenemos en el Campamento El Naranjo, a Chuy trabajando como técnico. El es responsable por la organizacion de los patrullajes de esta playa.

As of today we have collected 3 nests from El Naranjo beach and Punta Raza are reporting 4 nests. These nests have been collected over the past week. Comparing these results to previous seasons, we are doing well and are expecting a good season (It is raining lots!).

As with the previous season we have Chuy working as the camp technician on el Naranjo beach. He is responsible for the organisation of the nightly patrols in search of turtle’s eggs.

El día de viernes vicente y yo, fuimos a capacitar nuevos miembros del equipo de seguridad y policía presente en la playa Punta Raza, sobre las técnicas de protección de las tortugas marinas en la zona. Como pueden observar la primer temporada del campamento Punta Raza como un campamento aparte de El Naranjo fue un éxito y esperamos que el buen trabajo siga en esta playa. Muchas gracias a todas estas personas por su esfuerzo.

On Friday Vicente and I went to Punta Raza beach to train the new security guards and police present at this beach about the techniques used for the protection of marine turtles. As you can see the first season of Punta Raza camp as a Turtle protection camp in its own right was a great success. We hope that this hard work continues and thank all involved.

Plantando Mangle

Hace mucho publique fotos del estado en que se encuentra el Mangle de Los Ayala, Nayarit.

In an earlier entry I published photos of the poor condition of the Mangrove in Los Ayala, Nayarit.

Gracias a una donacion de plantas de mangle por parte del vivero de mangle de Laguna Mataiza (zacualpan, Nayarit) puedo pasarles unas imagenes de unas nuevas plantas de mangle, ya presentes en Los Ayala.

Due to a donation of mangrove plants by the nursery in Laguna Mataiza (Zacualpan, Nayarit) I can now publish photos of the newly planted mangrove plants in Los Ayala.

Como pueden apreciar en la primer imagen, este ramo del estero ha sido completamente deforestado y sufre de la degradacion del suelo por parte del escombro que esta en todas partes.

As I am sure you can apreciate from the first photo, this area of mangrove has been conpletely deforested and the ground is in poor condition due to the dumping of grave and bricks.

Las plantas ya tienen seis dias en el lugar. Espero que pueden sobrevivir bajo las presentes condiciones del suelo y agua. Si logran establecerse ahi, va a ayudar a la comunidad de Los Ayala por ser un importante lugar para el desarrollo de muchas especies para la pesca.

It has now been six days since the plants were planted. I hope that they will be able to survive under the present ground and water conditions. If they become established, this will bring benefits to the comunity of Los Ayala as the mangrove is an important place for the development of many important fisheries species.

Temporada 2007

Disculpa la falta de nueva entradas. Ya que estamos acercando a una nueva temporada de anidacion de las tortugas marinas aquí en Nayarit, espero tener muchas buenas noticias para reportar.

Sorry about the lack of new entries. Now that we are getting closer to the new nesting season for the turtles of Nayarit, hopefully I will have lots of good news to report.

Antes que comencemos la Temporada 2008, quiero reportar algunas datos del temporada 2007.

But before we start Season 2008, I want to report some of the results from 2007.

Hubo 181 El Naranjo. En la gráfica pueden ver como se relaciona a las temporadas previas. Nota: Durante las temporadas 1993 a 1999 solo se patrullaban la playa la noche del jueves, viernes y sábado.

The Total number of nests collected on El Naranjo beach was 181. In the chart below you can see how this relates to previous seasons. NB: During the seasons 1993 to 1999 the beach was only patrolled on the nights of thursday, friday and saturday.

Durante la temporada pasada, los voluntarios anotaron el kilómetro de playa donde se encontraron cada nido de tortuga. Hubo una incidencia más alta de anidación entre los kilómetros 5 y 6 con 60 nidos. Incidencia más bajo de nidos en los kilómetros extremas de la playa (kilómetro 1 y 9) con 4 nidos.

During 2007 the volunteers noted the kilometre where each nest was located. The highest number of nests were found between kilometre 5 and 6, with a total of 60 nests. The lowest number of nests were found at kilometre 1 and 9 with only 4 nests.

La gráfica que sigue muestra que el mes con mas nidos en la playa El Naranjo fue el mes de septiembre con 70 nidos.

The following chart shows that the month with the highest level of nesting at el Naranjo beach during 2007 was Septiembre with 70 nests.
